Tattoo aftercare instructions
These are some important tips for taking care of your new tattoo.
Healing is a big part of the process, and how you take care of your skin after our session can really affect how your tattoo looks long-term.
Protective film
At the end of the session, I will use a transparent film (Tegaderm or a similar brand) that will adhere to your skin to protect your tattoo from external agents during the initial days. I recommend keeping it on for a period of 24 to 72 hours. During this time, monitor the area to ensure there is no redness, especially around the edges. If this happens, you should remove it as it can sometimes cause an allergic reaction. When it's time to remove it, make sure to thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water before handling the tattoo.
To remove it, follow these steps: Start by slowly peeling off one corner of the film. Pull gently and at a low angle, as close to the skin as possible. If you feel resistance when removing it, stop and gently moisten the area with warm water to help loosen it before continuing. Avoid pulling it abruptly, as this can cause discomfort or skin irritation.
During the first 7 days after removing the film, it is recommended to wash the tattoo three times a day. This will help remove any dirt, excess ink, or moisturizer residue. You can then gradually reduce the frequency, until the area is fully recovered (usually one month)
How to wash your tattoo?
Properly washing your hands before touching the tattoo is essential to prevent the transfer of bacteria. It's important to use a mild, fragrance free soap for washing. Antibacterial, scented, or exfoliating soaps can be too harsh for freshly tattooed skin and may cause irritation. I recommend using a neutral glycerin soap, ideally liquid to prevent contamination.
Follow these steps to wash your tattoo properly:
Wet the tattoo with warm water. Apply a small amount of neutral glycerin soap to your hands and create foam. Gently wash the tattoo with circular motions, avoiding scrubbing too hard to prevent skin irritation. Rinse with warm water until no soap residue remains. Dry with a paper towel without scratching.
Moisturizing cream
After gently washing and drying the area, it's essential to use a neutral moisturizing cream to help regenerate the skin. You can find these creams at pharmacies (for example, Cicaplast, Dermaglós, Bepanthen). It is advisable for the cream to contain vitamins A and E and to be free of perfumes and petrolatum, which is the main component of vaseline, as this can clog pores and affect the skin's ability to breathe. Applying a thin layer over the tattoo area is sufficient. If you apply too much cream, you could clog the pores and prolong the healing time.
General advice
You're likely to experience itching during the healing process; resist the urge to scratch, as it could affect the final outcome of your tattoo.
Avoid tight clothing, bracelets, watches, rings, or any accessories that come into constant contact with the area.
It's advisable to steer clear of physical activities that might cause excessive sweating or friction on the tattoo during the initial days.
Protect your tattoo from direct sun exposure. Sun rays can damage and fade the tattoo colors. During the first 20 days, whenever you're out in the sun, cover it with clothing. Afterwards, you can use sunscreen to keep its vibrant appearance
